“Schiedam in motion: from smart land use to sustainable communities” is the oneliner that describes the good practice of Schiedam. Schiedam used the roof of a 2,5 km motorway tunnel to relocate sports facilities and use the former sites for redevelopment. URBACT selected this project to award Schiedam with the Good Practice City label.
URBACT about the Schiedam practice:
– the theme is highly relevant for EU cities and links to the Urban Agenda for the EU priorities
– the proposal has been fully developed and implemented following the URBACT principles of integration and participation
– the practice is flexible and easily adaptable for other cities facing similar challenges of reusing unexploited infrastructure resources in an optimized, sustainable and environmentally aware manner.
The URBACT Good Practice Call was hugely popular amongst European cities with a total of 270 submitted proposals involving 219 cities from 29 different countries.
The Good Practice City label will be formally presented during the URBACT City Festival in October in Tallinn (Estonia).
